The EVZ wants to set new standards in women’s hockey and has succeeded in doing so from the start. The opponents in the second highest division, the SWHL B, must suffer from this. As a reminder: the Zugers had to start there because the association directors had decided so.

Now they’re practically reducing the SWHL B Championship to absurdity. After four games, the Zug team was victorious with a goal difference of 68:0! It is clear to the opponents: they are only competing for second place. The leadership throne is reserved for the EVZ, which is on a promotional mission. “Indirectly, this is also a strong signal to the clubs in the Women’s League,” said Paolo Angeloni, director of the amateur competition Region League, where women’s hockey is based.

The fact that the EVZ wants to invest a lot in women’s hockey certainly fits in with the spirit of the association “and our strategy to involve the professional clubs”, says Angeloni. Two years ago, only one professional club, ZSC, had a women’s team in the premier league, now there are five with Zurich, Bern, Davos, Fribourg and Ambri (Lugano is independent).

Nevertheless, Angeloni supported her decision at the time not to let the Zug women start immediately in the Women’s League. “We wanted to protect those clubs that have been investing in women’s hockey for years and therefore had to find a compromise.” That was: SWHL B instead of D. Because – as the regulations prescribed – participation in the lowest class would not have been an option for the EVZ.

“Sad season for the other teams”

But what does Angeloni say about the fact that the dominance of the Zug women is so frightening? “That is not very pleasant, but at the same time not unexpected. It will be a somewhat sad season for the other teams.” The association did not expect that the EVZ would also have such a star ensemble in the SWHL B. “Lara Stalder does not belong in this competition.” The EVZ captain has 33 (!) scorer points (19 goals/14 assists) to her name after four games.

The residents of Zug are aware of their situation. That’s why they set themselves other ambitious goals in addition to promotion. For example, they participate in the EWHL Supercup, a European entry-level competition. The final tournament will take place in Zug this weekend. In the semi-finals on Saturday, EVZ will face MAC Budapest (from 3 p.m. in the Bossard Arena), the other will be played by Hokiklub Budapest and Memmingen (from 3 p.m. in the Academy Arena). Sunday will be all about bronze from 12 noon and gold from 3.30 pm (Bossard Arena).
