It happens again: with the Lakers, a young player grows into a solid, responsible player – and is poached by the competition with a lucrative offer. David Aebischer (23), now top scorer at SCRJ, will leave the club. The defender has signed a well-paid five-year contract with Lugano.
“We have a healthy salary hierarchy at the Lakers, which is crucial to being successful with our budget,” said athletic director Janick Steinmann. «We are aware that we are financially far removed from the big clubs. We do everything we can to grow healthily as a club step by step. We have to accept that every now and then we will lose a super talent and a great person like David.” Steinmann brought Aebischer from Gottéron to Obersee three years ago.
The young defenseman fell out of favor with Friborg, but he flourished with the Lakers. He currently logs more ice time than veteran Maxim Noreau (36, Ka). At the SCRJ more and more responsibility was transferred to Aebischer and in his third season at Rappi-Jona he is now playing so well that he could choose his future employer.
Lehmann and Egli were also poached
Like two well-known players before him: Marco Lehmann (24) also switched to the Lakers in 2020. Steinmann discovered him at Kloten, then still in the Swiss League. After two seasons, the dazzling striker was lured by SC Bern. Dominik Egli (25) took the same route from Kloten to Rappi-Jona a year earlier. There he became a Nati defender and left the club for Davos in 2021.
And now Aebischer. HC Lugano is busy further improving what is probably the most expensive defense in the league. In the Ticino hockey program ‘That’s Hockey’ on RSI on Monday evening, the question was asked why other team leaders do not know how to scout such talent instead of poaching them – often from the Lakers – for a lot of money.
