Someone is beaming. After the clear 3-0 victory of his team from Leverkusen, Bayer captain Lukas Hradecky (33) took the time to answer questions from the media. “That was the best performance of the season, we had a lot of control and didn’t allow much,” the Finn told Blick after the derby against Cologne.

Football Germany rubs its eyes. Leverkusen’s sixth win in their seventh match. Undefeated. And one person played a big role in this success: Nati captain Granit Xhaka (31). Even against Cologne he was in almost every Bayer attack. He is the strategist in the center, he pulls the strings, he “is the boss on the field,” as Hradecky says. He cannot be emphasized enough. Hradecky: “He is one of the most important signings this season, if not the most important. Granit calms the game down, he sets the pace, he decides how we want to play. And he takes responsibility every day. I am grateful to him for that.”

Sports boss Simon Rolfes (41) also gave flowers for Xhaka. He is very important, “in terms of character and also in terms of football. He is the pace setter. Experienced, smart, good at fitting in.”

Leverkusen dreams

And what does Xhaka himself say? The Swiss is more than satisfied after the derby. ‘We run, we fight. Everyone knows what he or she has to do. It’s really fun with this team,” he told DAZN. For him, coach Xabi Alonso (41) is a key to success. “For me it is an honor to play under him. He is so ambitious and hungry for success. During training he almost runs more than the players. He is a perfectionist and you can see that on the field now.”

Leverkusen is at the top of the Bundesliga this young season. Can you dream yet? “We can dream,” says Xhaka. But Hradecky raises his hand. ‘We can’t leave now. We have good characters in the team. It fits. Humility is required.”

For now, it’s a break for the national team. The game will not be played again until October 21. Then Leverkusen will face Wolfsburg away.
