The Swiss orienteering team impresses at the end of the European sprint championships in Italy. Matthias Kyburz successfully defended the title in the knockout sprint, while Elena Howald-Roos and Natalia Gemperle won silver and bronze in the women’s event.

Matthias Kyburz, also world champion in this discipline, won both the qualifying and all final rounds in Vicenza. Thanks to the victory, the 33-year-old from Aargau moved past Norwegian Kasper Harlem Fosser in the overall World Cup rankings. It is his sixth victory in the overall World Cup. Kyburz won gold in the sprint on Wednesday and bronze in the relay on Friday.

Among the women, Swede Tove Alexandersson is also the top favorite. She distanced Howald-Roos by 3.5 seconds. For the 32-year-old from Ticino it is an almost perfect end to her top sports career. Gemperle, also 32 and from Russia, lost eight seconds to Alexandersson. With two gold, silver and bronze medals each, the Swiss team exceeded the target of four podium places. (SDA)
