It’s no longer just the sun shining in Ticino for Lugano coach Luca Gianinazzi, his team is stumbling again.

Blick: Luca Gianinazzi, you took over the coaching job a year ago when Lugano had 9 points after eight games. Now there are 9 points after nine games. What does this balance tell you?
Luca Gianinazzi: They are two different situations. Last year I took over and didn’t do the preparation myself. Of course we are not happy with the points now. But there were also good matches where the results simply weren’t right.

Where do you see the problems?
In our defensive game. We are also not efficient enough in our scoring options. At five-a-side we have to score more goals. But we make it difficult for ourselves. Even if things don’t go well, we shouldn’t be afraid of a bad outcome. We must focus on the present. And when it comes to our performance, it will pay off.

Do you feel the cohesion in the team?
A hundred percent. I don’t just feel it, I see it in the behavior of the players. They are the first to be dissatisfied with the situation.

It wasn’t easy for you last season, and now it remains difficult. How much does that get on your nerves?
Last season was a different situation for me. I didn’t have much time to work with the team in training. I’ve definitely made mistakes trying to make changes too quickly. I learned from that. Yes, it is a difficult moment for us now and our game is not yet where it should be. But we are well on our way there. That’s why it’s not stressful for me. You can only learn from failures.

It is known that the pressure from the public in Ticino is enormous. What experiences have you had with it?
Not a bad one so far. I feel the support. Of course the fans are dissatisfied and I understand that. But now is the time when we have to stick together. Expectations are high in Lugano – and so is the passion. And that’s cool. Without passion it would be boring.
