Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-Quick: The merger of the cycling giants has apparently collapsed

The two top cycling teams will not merge.

The planned merger of the two cycling giants Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-Quick Step into a Dutch-Belgian super team has probably failed. Belgian media reported this on Friday. Accordingly, too many uncertain factors led to the advanced talks between the two racing teams ending without the expected agreement.

The Jumbo Visma team led by the Danish tour winner Jonas Vingegaard and the Soudal Quick Step team led by the Belgian time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel should have created a team that could have dominated the cycling circuit like no other. However, this would have resulted in as many as half of the drivers and employees of the previous teams being left without a job in the short term.

With top star Evenepoel?

As the Belgian media report, the powerful Soudal Quick Step team boss Patrik Lefevere has agreed with his main sponsor to continue working until at least 2025. However, the question is whether this will happen together with top star Evenepoel.

However, with Vingegaard’s team, a new main financier could come into the picture: the supermarket chain Jumbo, which wants to say goodbye by the end of 2024 at the latest, may soon be replaced by the internet multinational Amazon. (AFP/mom)
