Rio world champion Mats Hummels returns to the national football team after more than two years. New national coach Julian Nagelsmann surprisingly called up the Borussia Dortmund veteran for the upcoming trip to the US. The 34-year-old played the last of his 76 international matches in the 2021 European Championship round against England (0-2) under Joachim Löw. Hansi Flick did it without Hummels during his term in office.
Nagelsmann also nominated newcomer Chris Führich (VfB Stuttgart) for the matches on October 14 in Hartford against hosts USA (9 p.m. CEST/RTL) and four days later in Philadelphia against Gold Cup winner Mexico (2 a.m. CEST/ARD). (Union Berlin) and Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen). Munich’s Leon Goretzka, who Flick had recently ignored, returns to the 26-man squad. Thomas Müller, Bernd Leno and David Raum are also back after a long absence.
In return, Nagelsmann will have to do without Dortmund’s Emre Can, who was last placed under Flick, and his teammate Nico Schlotterbeck. Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) and Benjamin Henrichs (RB Leipzig) are injured.
Nagelsmann’s demands on the players
“We are a new coaching team and want to see as many players as possible in the national team,” said Nagelsmann. The goal is “that we get used to each other as quickly as possible in the short time we have and try to implement the content in the few training sessions.”
The mid-season trip to the US was previously criticized by some clubs. But Nagelsmann demands full commitment: “I expect, even in this short time, that you can see that everyone wants to play for the DFB, that everyone wants to win games, even in the here and now.
