By 2030, ski jumpers will no longer fly to the city of Sapporo.

According to media reports, the northern Japanese city of Sapporo no longer wants to sign up to host the 2030 Winter Olympics. As several Japanese media have consistently reported, Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto wants Japanese Olympic Committee President Yasuhiro Yamashita, inform of the decision next week.

The background is the massive bribery scandals surrounding the Olympic Games in Tokyo in the summer of 2021. It is difficult to gain public understanding for an application for 2030, reports television channel NHK. Sapporo is now considering applying for 2034 or later, the report said.

The Swiss people would organize the Olympic Games

The site of the 1972 Winter Games was once a favorite to host again. The ceremony was supposed to take place this year, but was postponed to July 2024. After the gigantism of recent years and various scandals, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is now struggling to find suitable candidates.

In just seven years, the Winter Games have become an issue again in Switzerland. Swiss Olympic is currently investigating whether a candidacy is feasible and desirable. A current survey by the Tamedia Group and “20 Minutes” shows that there is a certain degree of goodwill among the Swiss population. 29 percent answered yes when asked if they were in favor of decentralized gaming in Switzerland, while another 27 percent said “somewhat yes.”

On September 19 and 20, a total of 29,091 people in all parts of the country were surveyed by the LeeWas Institute. (SDA)
