Uproar in the match against YB: Red Star fans commemorate Kosovo attackers with choreo

Does this choreo by the Red Star fans have consequences?

Bern’s 2-2 draw in Belgrade was accompanied by an unpleasant political campaign. The attackers on the Kosovar police officers on September 24 are honored in the Red Star Belgrade fan curve.

About two weeks ago, a group of Serbian extremists carried out a fatal attack on police in the Kosovo village of Banjska. The international environment reacted to the events with consternation.

Switzerland described it as a “heinous attack”. Serbian exponents, such as Novak Djokovic, did not distance themselves from the action. The tennis star instead mourned the fallen attackers.

Huge banner

The Red Star fans followed Djokovic with their choreo. A group of fans unfurled the large banner with Stefan Nedeljkovic’s portrait on it. He is one of the perpetrators involved in the bloody attack in Kosovo. Below are in large letters the names of two other agitators killed in a shootout with Kosovo police: Igor Milenkovic and Bojan Mijailovic.

As a reminder, to this day Serbia does not recognize Kosovo’s autonomy and demands the return of the former province. Time and again, the Serbian state uses martial rhetoric and sabre-rattling to create a menacing backdrop towards the country, which is largely populated by Albanians.

Kosovo media condemns action

Logically, the campaign is not well received in the Kosovo media. It says that the Serbian fans celebrated terrorists. It is also said that UEFA should sanction the club for this disgrace.

It is not yet clear whether the action will have any consequences. In response to a question from Blick, UEFA said that all events that occurred in the recent Champions League matches (Tuesday and Wednesday) are still being investigated. No comment will be made on any matter until this process is complete.

Belgrade ultras known for scandals

The Ultras of Red Star are known for their fanatical nationalism and affiliation with the military. Just a year ago, they even caused a stir at a match with pro-Russian chants. Shortly before, in the derby against Partizan, they showed a treacherous choreo to mock Ukraine. Tombstones were visible on a blue-yellow background. (sbe/dti/par)
