Belinda Bencic (26) is missing the current tournaments in China due to food poisoning and can therefore no longer qualify for the Women’s Masters.
Mexico was not worth a trip for Belinda Bencic. Before the tournament in Guadalajara, the best Swiss tennis player suffered serious food poisoning. Not only did the world number 15 have to forfeit the event there at short notice, she also missed the ongoing, actually mandatory WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing and will not be able to participate in Zhengzhou as planned next week.
Opened again
It is also clear that Bencic can no longer achieve her stated goal of reaching the top eight WTA finals. It is currently unclear whether the 26-year-old from eastern Switzerland can play another tournament before the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup from November 7 to 12, where Switzerland is the defending champion.
“She was sick for 10 days and lost a lot of her condition,” her management said when asked by Keystone-SDA. “The China tour therefore came too early.” (SDA/men)
