Daniel Winnik’s shooting against the Swiss referees is not new. This time, however, he and his club Geneva-Servette directly attack a referee: Daniel Stricker, 48 years old.
Winnik received a disciplinary punishment from referees Stricker and Micha Hebeisen on Sunday evening in extra time in Zug (1-2 defeat in a penalty shootout) for unsportsmanlike behavior towards officials. The 38-year-old waved a white cloth back and forth on his stick after Vincent Praplan’s goal was disallowed in extra time (intervention by Sami Vatanen’s goalkeeper). The league therefore initiated proceedings and asked the Canadian and his employer for an explanation.
“Unjustified contact”
It now states, according to the decision of deputy single judge Reto Annen: “In 2019, the defendants (Daniel Winnik and Geneva-Servette, editor’s note) filed a request with the league because the referee responsible for the Daniel Stricker hit the suspect during a match while sitting on the bench. The league would have acknowledged that there was unlawful contact, but this would not have led to disciplinary action for the referee. Since then, a personal revenge campaign has been raging against him.”
Stricker has a problem with the player, Winnik and reigning champion Geneva-Servette claim in their joint statement. They give examples in which, in their opinion, Winnik was unfairly punished. During the match in Zug, the striker was also insulted by a linesman. “This would have completely frustrated him.” The two sides admit that Winnik put the cloth on the stick and waved it, but Winnik “did not do this in the direction of the referee.”
Statement qualified as a protective claim
The deputy single judge does not discuss the alleged incidents from the past in his judgment, because they are not relevant to the present case. Annen qualifies the statement that the blanket campaign was not addressed to the referee as a protective claim. Winnik is eliminated from a match. He and Geneva-Servette must pay a fine of 2,260 francs and the costs of the procedure (740 francs). (Yes)
