Lena Bickel secures Switzerland a quota place for the women at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp.
Because the Swiss women did not qualify for the team competition at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, only Lena Bickel and Anny Wu will start in Antwerp. Both complete the four devices without major errors.
Bickel recorded 50,632 points. That’s enough for her to be there in Paris, provided she is selected by Swiss Olympic. The top 14 athletes (one per country) who do not belong to one of the twelve countries qualified for the team competition will win a quota place.
Satisfied Swiss women
“I am very happy with my performance,” says 18-year-old Bickel from Ticino, who took part in her first World Cup. “It wasn’t my best match, but it was a good one. I was shaking the whole time.” At the end, after all the tension is gone, she cries.
Wu gets 48,799 points. The twenty-year-old from Aargau came on short notice to replace Caterina Cereghetti, who had an injured foot. “I really enjoyed it,” says Wu. It helps her that she had already participated in the 2019 World Cup in Stuttgart. However, she did not compete at her best as her preparation was compromised by wrist problems. (SDA)
