At FCZ, an external advisor becomes a permanent employee. As announced by Blick, player agent Milos Malenovic (38) is the new sports director at the Super League leader.

FCZ chairman Ancillo Canepa (70) said at the presentation: “Milos was our preferred candidate from the start, Heliane and I have known him for many years. He impresses with his efficient way of working, his entrepreneurial talent and his football expertise. He was a partner with integrity and honesty in all transfers.”

“It has always been my wish”

For his part, Malenovic says: “I am very motivated for this step. I have worked as an advisor for more than ten years, but I have always wanted to take responsibility at a club.” As a club employee, he was able to feel again the emotions that he had always missed since the start of his playing career.

The ex-professional was previously an internationally active player’s agent. And it remained that way when, after the departure of sports director Marinko Jurendic (45) to Augsburg, he was given a temporary mandate at the FCZ to investigate the club for improvements in transfer and player development.

Malenovic gave up his player agency for FCZ-Job

According to information from Blick, it was decided early on to change Malenovic’s party. But now Canepa and Malenovic are at pains to say the consulting mandate was not a disguised trial period or probation.

But it took time anyway to get Malenovic released on paper for an FCZ job. His player agency Soccer Mondial merged with the major football company VPA Sports International. Officially, he no longer has mandates from the players he previously advised, a number of whom are also in the FCZ team: Antonio Marchesano, Mirlind Kryeziu, Junior Ligue, Ramon Guzzo and the Reichmuth brothers Nils and Miguel.

Malenovic: “That was a big decision. I’m giving up something that I built from scratch.” But will there really be a clean separation between the team leader and his former agency in the future? “It’s all contractually agreed that I will stop all operational matters. Anyone who knows me , know that such a professional and transparent step makes sense to me.”

Malenovic has Serbian roots and played in the FCZ youth team. Later also for GC, St. Gallen and Xamax, before he had to end his career prematurely in the Netherlands (torn syndemotic ligament was incorrectly treated) and switched to consultancy. Now the next step in his career is to become a club official.

His mandate as a club analyst, and he was also a member of the sports committee, caused a lot of excitement in the consultancy world. The gist: conflict of interest. But Canepa always brushed it off, saying Malenovic’s duties were clearly separated.

Canepa is also now fully convinced: “He will transfer all activities to third parties and work exclusively for FCZ. He was the best player agent in Switzerland. Now we want to take the next step with Milos in the field of sports and economics.”

No investors in the background

For coach Bo Henriksen (48), this ends the dual mandate as coach and interim sports director, which he reluctantly fulfilled during the summer transfer period. One of the first tasks for the new sports director Malenovic now concerns Henriksen. According to Danish media, the successful coach had long announced internally that he would not renew his contract, which expires in 2024.

But now Henriksen leads the league undefeated in the best André Breitenreiter style. Will Malenovic persuade the Dane to extend his contract – or does he have completely different ideas? He says: “We will soon sit down together and see what emerges from the conversations.”

Then there is the rumor that Malenovic could bring new investors who would one day replace the Canepas. But the president says: “Milos has nothing to do with a sale. A sale of FC Zurich is not under discussion.”
