“Unacceptable and hurtful”: league boss Studhalter defends himself at Lucerne stadium

FC Luzern has a dispute with shareholder Bernhard Alpstaeg about ownership.

It is the central question in the Lucerne stadium dispute: were the city of Lucerne and the FCL deprived of their right of first refusal when the stadium was sold to Bernhard Alpstaeg (77) in 2019?

One of the accusations made by the current club bosses: The then FCL president and lawyer Philipp Studhalter (47) allegedly helped Alpstaeg to acquire 60 percent of the stadium shares with the purchase of Antoga AG. Studhalter thus placed the interests of his former client above those of the club.

Now Studhalter is defending himself against the accusations in an interview with Nau.ch. “This is not acceptable. For me, it has always been about the FCL progressing and becoming bigger. Hearing unfounded criminal accusations against me now hurts me a lot,” said current league boss Studhalter.

Did the FCL never want the stadium majority?

He explains: “I informed the board of directors in detail in an email on September 10, 2019. This email, which went to everyone, included the municipal decision, which stated that Bernhard Alpstaeg therefore has the majority in the stadium.

With FCL majority shareholder Alpstaeg, the sale went to a person “ideally or economically close” to the club, Studhalter said. According to him, this excludes the right of first refusal. He has not heard anything about this argument from the FCL board of directors. “Because, in addition to the contractual situation, it was never in the interest of FCL Holding AG to acquire this 60 percent of Stadion Luzern AG.”

Studhalter strikes back

Studhalter is now launching a legal counterattack, especially against FCL VR member Ursula Engelberger. “I was vigorously and publicly attacked by Ursula Engelberger, against my better judgment,” he says. “At the general meeting in December 2022, she claimed there were no allegations against me. There are no criminal proceedings against me. A line was crossed last Wednesday with her reputation-damaging statements. I will defend myself against Ursula Engelberger’s statements, both from a regulatory and criminal perspective.”

Another chapter is added to the seemingly endless saga of stadium ownership and the FCL. Despite all the confusion surrounding him, Studhalter wants to stand for re-election as league boss in November. (cmu)
