Marco Lehmann (24) has had two years of epidemics. Serious health problems thwarted all his plans. He made an impressive comeback last weekend. With two important goals for SC Bern. On Friday, the former junior international scored the late winning goal in the 2-1 away win against Ajoie. And the next day he opened the scoring with a 1-0 win in the 4-2 win against Biel.
“It’s nice that it works again. “So I can forget last season the longer it lasts,” says the striker happily. The first goal in particular, on Friday in the Jura, was very special. “It was the first after two years and a difficult time. I was able to enjoy it all the more.”
Disastrous holiday in Greece
His suffering began after his excellent first season in the National League with the SCRJ Lakers. He immediately scored 11 goals and 19 assists and was named “Young Person of the Year”. The hockey world seemed to be at his feet. But then Lehmann was stopped the following year by a lingering concussion.
The SCB wanted him and still got him. But instead of being able to attack again after his transfer, an infection that spread after his holiday in Greece left him completely out of action in the summer of 2022. Lehmann’s stomach rebelled, he could barely eat and lost ten kilos of body weight.
Emergency brake pulled
Still, he wanted to show himself to his new club and was even on the ice in four games with SCB as a weak player. But this venture was completely hopeless: Lehmann had to pull the emergency brake at the beginning of October: “My condition was not compatible with professional sport.” His first season at SCB was over before it had really started.
He needed patience. Lots of patience. Lehmann’s condition improved only gradually. He pinned his hopes on the new season. Finally I could continue the preparation under normal conditions and build up my physical strength. “That was important, otherwise it would have been difficult,” he says.
“Just enjoy hockey again”
His goal for the season was simply to “enjoy hockey again, because I haven’t been able to do it for so long.” But then comes this last weekend of September. Almost a year after the absolute low point. And Lehmann is finally being compensated. For his suffering. For the uncertainty that must have been painful. And for the enormous patience he had to show.
With two goals that played a decisive role in SCB gaining six points. All this puts a smile on his face: “I’m overjoyed that it’s already working so well. Because after the past two years I no longer knew whether it would even work anymore.” Marco Lehmann more than deserves it.
