First a promotion coach, then the man of international business and later even the best coach of the Bundesliga season: Urs Fischer (57) has been everyone’s favorite at Union Berlin for years.
But now, for the first time since he took office in 2018, something like a headwind is blowing in his face. Saturday’s 0-1 defeat at promoted Heidenheim sealed the dark September for the Berliners. Union lost all five league games last month – four times in the Bundesliga and once in the Champions League.
Offensively there is a silence
That is why Fischer does not immediately fall into alarmism. “We played a good match for 90 minutes. I counted four or five big chances for us, but we didn’t reward ourselves, and that’s what the situation looks like now,” he summarized the performance against Heidenheim soberly as usual. Just a week ago, after the 2-0 defeat against Hoffenheim, he criticized his own players for their ‘non-performance’.
Actually, the offensive is a problem child; Union has been waiting for a goal for 332 minutes. Chelsea loan player Datro Fofana (20) sins in spades against Heidenheim. And the defense – last season’s showpiece with 38 goals conceded – is also faltering: Union did not keep a clean sheet in any of the six Bundesliga games.
Champions League and BVB are waiting
“We must quickly try to regain a sense of success. We now have two days to focus on the next task,” says Fischer. This next task is on Tuesday in the Champions League against the Portuguese of Sporting Braga. The competition continues on Saturday against Dortmund.
Fischer is inspired by Heidenheim trainer Frank Schmidt (49), who hands him a copy of his recently published biography. “Maybe there’s a tip in there,” the Swiss jokes dryly. Title of the book: ‘Unbreakable’. Despite the Black September, it would also apply to Union and Urs Fischer. (cmu)
