Osimhen is publicly exposed by his employer; the club’s response to the faux pas is unlikely to satisfy him.

It’s the big excitement in Serie A: Napoli mocks its own star striker Victor Osimhen (24) on Tiktok. He missed a penalty against Bologna last weekend – and was exposed by his own club in a mocking video.

Osimhen’s anger runs deep afterwards. Last year’s champion hero feels betrayed by his own club and his agent is even threatening a lawsuit. When Napoli met Udinese on Wednesday, he gave his teammates the cold shoulder upon arrival. A video of the icy scene is going viral. Osimhen then provided an answer on the field: he scored the second goal in the 4-1 win and then cautiously celebrated.

The faux pas comes at the wrong time as the Nigerian forward is already locked in a clash with Napoli. The relationship with new coach Rudi Garcia is tense and there was a recent argument after a substitution. Negotiations on a contract extension have reached an impasse.

Napoli defends the video

You’d think Napoli would therefore aim to smooth things over. But a statement published Thursday raises even more questions. The association claims it “never intended to insult or mock Osimhen.” After all, last season’s top scorer is a “pillar of the club”. How much he is appreciated is evident from the fact that all offers for him were rejected in the summer.

But the club does not offer its striker any real apologies. On the contrary: Napoli is even trying to defend the video, which has since been deleted. “On social media, expressive language is used in an informal and joking manner,” the statement said. Therefore, the intention was not to mock Osimhen.

A response from Osimhen to the club’s statement is still pending. However, he recently deleted all Instagram posts showing him in a Napoli shirt. (sbe)
