“We hope for better stability”: a three-man chain should help FCB-Schultz out of trouble

FC Basel only plays a draw against Lucerne. So the liberation effort failed. The Bebbi are still stuck in the bottom half of the table, with just five points from eight games. “I’m disappointed. The point doesn’t really help us in the table,” said coach Timo Schultz after the final whistle.

Now Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy will come to Basel next Sunday (4:30 p.m.). Anyone who had predicted at the start of the season that the two teams would have equal points at this point in the season would probably have laughed. But it’s the naked truth.

What does this FCB have to do differently than before to survive against the promoted team? “Not a goal against. Playing to zero.” That sounds like a simple recipe. But not when you consider that Basel has the third-worst defense in the league with fifteen goals conceded.

Three-man chain as a solution

To strengthen the defense, Schultz deployed a three-man chain for the first time against Lucerne on Thursday evening. There were two reasons for this. “We hoped for better defensive stability. I also rewarded Finn Van Breemen for really good training performances and he confirmed that in the match.”

In fact, Basel’s defense allowed little or nothing in for Lucerne. The Central Swiss team generated a lot of power play on the wings. But it was rarely really dangerous in Marwin Hitz’s penalty area. This is certainly progress regarding future tasks.

The next job is already around the corner. But Schultz doesn’t want to talk about the biggest game. “Every match is important and gives you three points.” But even he cannot deny that a victory against SLO is necessary. For his spirit, but also for that of the entire city.
