Antonio Lobato stands out with an irreverent comment about Schumacher’s health.

This statement backfired: TV presenter Antonio Lobato (58) made a verbal misstep on Sunday during the broadcast of the Formula 1 race in Suzuka – and had to deal with a shitstorm.

In a conversation with Formula 1 experts from broadcaster DAZN, the Spaniard joked about the health of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher (54). When Toni Cuquerella said that Adrian Newey (Red Bull engineer) “has to shake because Antonio Lobato is coming”, he replied: “Let Michael shake! … Well, Michael can’t shake.”

Angry reactions

Then a shitstorm about Lobato broke out on social media. This went so far that the TV man felt compelled to comment.

In a video message on Monday, Lobato apologized: “I made a mistake without bad intentions. “I didn’t want to make fun of Michael Schumacher,” he claims. The saying was ‘awkward and clumsy’ with no ulterior motive. In any case, he is one of the admirers of the German Formula 1 legend.

On December 29, 2013, Schumacher had a serious accident during the winter holidays. Since then, little has been made public about his health. (sbe)
