Sad scene: The black girl is the only child who does not receive a medal.

It’s a sad video that’s being passed around on various platforms these days. It shows a group of girls lining up next to each other during a gymnastics event to receive their deserved medals.

While one child after another is happy with the award, one girl is left without a medal. She is also the only black gymnast in the group. The incident happened during a gymnastics competition in Dublin in March 2022.

But it is only now that the public is becoming aware of the scene – and the Irish Gymnastics Association is now facing accusations of racism.

“That was very painful for us.”

The American gymnastics dominant Simone Biles (26) – herself a black athlete – has also responded to the photos. She writes: “There is no place for racism in any sport!” She continues: “It broke my heart to see that, so I sent her a video.”

The parents of the affected girl made the incident public in the Irish newspaper ‘Independent’. There, the young gymnast’s mother told how disappointed the family was about the association. She referred the matter to the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation in Switzerland. “We are often the only black family at gymnastics events and that was very painful for us.” To date, her daughter has not received an apology from the association.

Association responds to accusations

Last Friday, Gymnastics Ireland responded to the video viewed millions of times with a statement. A few days after the incident, the gymnastics club received a complaint about racist behavior from the girl’s mother. The official involved in the ceremony at the time expressed her deepest regret. The association also describes the action as an honest mistake. They requested the opportunity to apologize to the participant and her family. However, this request was initially rejected. After noticing the mistake, the official also presented the girl with the medal before she left the interior. (Gentlemen)
