The top teams Jumbo-Visma from the Netherlands and Soudal-QuickStep from Belgium are negotiating a merger. A corresponding report from the “Cycling Fits” platform was confirmed by those involved.
It seems doubtful whether the deal under the name Soudal-Visma will be completed in 2024. A merger is more likely in 2025. Because supermarket chain Jumbo is withdrawing as main sponsor, the Dutch team, which won the three major national tours this year with Primoz Roglic (33), Jonas Vingegaard (26) and Sepp Kuss (29), is looking for new donors. Investors from Saudi Arabia were recently discussed.
Fusion would likely cause driver castling
The merger must ensure that numerous transfers take place. Because with Roglic, Vingegaard, Kuss or Wout van Aert (29) on the one hand and Remco Evenepoel (23) or Julian Alaphilippe (31) on the other, there would be an oversupply of stars.
Former world champion Evenepoel has apparently been planning a switch to the British Ineos team for some time. And Roglic is connected to several teams. (SDA)
