Winterthur changes goalkeeper without necessity, instead of Ösi Markus Kuster (29), Marvin Keller (21), just loaned from YB, makes his competitive debut for FCW against Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy.
And Keller promptly shows why coach Patrick Frame thinks so much of him that he shaves the actually flawless Kuster for Keller. With a strong save in injury time, he secured Winterthur’s win against SLO.
Keller: “The fact that I can start here with three points is the perfect evening. In the end it became difficult again. I’m just glad I could help the team.”
Number 1 was not a YB condition
Both YB and Winterthur emphasize that there was no No. 1 requirement for Keller when the loan deal was finalized. “My goal was definitely to play. “But I wasn’t sure,” says Keller himself. The great goalkeeping talent adds: “I am very happy that I have already been able to play two games in the Cup and the Super League. Now I’m doing everything I can to keep playing. But to stay number 1, you have to show performance.”
Coach Framework confirms this principle and praises Kuster for not showing any frustration about the relegation during training. “Shaved is the wrong word anyway. Kuster will soon be able to make minutes again, whether it is in an English week or in the cup,” said Frame.
As a spectator at the Champions League in Bern
The fans on the Schützenwiese do not blame Keller, the former GC Junior, for displacing the popular Kuster. When he safely hits a high ball again against SLO, there is even applause.
This is completely in line with YB. The Bernese team signed Keller from FC Wil last winter, and now he will continue to mature as a Super League goalkeeper in Winterthur. Keller will remain with YB until 2027, and not just because of the contract. «I have found very good colleagues at YB in a short time, I will continue to follow them and wish them the best of luck. I was also in the stadium against Leipzig.”
