The verdict against Jérôme Boatengs was overturned.

In November 2022, former Bayern defender Jérôme Boateng (35) was sentenced by the Munich Regional Court to a total fine of 1.2 million euros for two cases of bodily harm. The court’s ruling at the time: Boateng allegedly physically attacked and violently insulted his ex-girlfriend – the mother of his children – during a Caribbean holiday in 2018.

Even then, Boateng’s lawyer, Leonard Walischewski, called for the verdict to be overturned. The proceedings against his client were “shockingly unfair”. “Boateng was finally convicted before the appeal process even began,” Walischewski claims.

Complete annulment of the judgment

The Bavarian Supreme Court came to a similar conclusion on Thursday. The presiding judge orders that the verdict be quashed “in its entirety” and sends the case back to the Munich Regional Court for re-examination.

The reason: “There were several serious procedural errors,” is the judgment. Evidence that could have acquitted Boateng was rejected by the judge, among other things. “The verdict of the Munich Regional Court does not even remotely stand up to legal scrutiny,” explains Nikolaus Stackmann, President of the Bavarian Supreme Court.

Not off the hook yet

What now? Boateng is not off the hook yet. The prosecutor also demanded that the 2022 verdict be quashed, as they consider it too minor. The lawyer of Boateng’s ex-girlfriend is demanding a prison sentence instead of a fine for the former DFB star, who was most recently under contract with Olympique Lyon.

There is a risk of a new trial. (sbe)
