Last Friday, Harri Säteri (33) helped EHC Biel win 3-0 in Lugano. Joren van Pottelberghe (26) was not there. Instead of making the long journey to Ticino, he was allowed to relax at home. And the next day, rested and with a top performance, he also defeated Zug 2-1.
“Joren showed a great match,” says sports director Martin Steinegger (51), still impressed, “if he had spent seven to eight hours on the bus the day before, this would hardly have been possible.” The Seeländer’s special plan has been fully developed and should become part of the program this season: “We tend to approach it in such a way that one of the two goalkeepers does not make the trip to an away game further down the road on a Friday we play then another game on Saturday,” says Steinegger.
Weigh the risk
Of course there is also a risk involved. Säteri was injured on Friday. Then Biel should have put the junior goalkeeper Diego Simeoni (18) in goal, while Van Pottelberghe was sitting comfortably in front of the television in his living room. Steinegger: “This risk must be weighed up. But in comparison, we see a greater chance of scoring points through this measure.”
Biel can also afford this luxury because it has a luxurious goalkeeping duo with Säteri and Van Pottelberghe. Both are exceptionally strong goalkeepers in the league, but only one can play at a time. And after this season, this tandem in Zealand will be over anyway. Steinegger said, “I can’t imagine going into next season with either of them.”
Hot goalkeeper question for the future
The contracts of Säteri and Van Pottelberghe expire at the end of the season. Säteri was only brought in a year ago because Van Pottelberghe was out for a long time with a torn cruciate ligament. Because play-off finalist Biel played such a great season and Säteri shone on the ice, but was also a great asset to the team as a person, Steinegger did not have the heart to say goodbye to him after just one year. And renewed for another season. But in the long run, with two fit No. 1 goalkeepers, “it’s not that easy for either of them and it’s a little harder for Joren,” says Steinegger.
He therefore has to make a difficult decision: which of his current goalkeepers will he go with next season? Or, depending on the approach, will a constellation arise in which both leave? It is known that Van Pottelberghe, who also shone in the play-offs last season as Säteri’s shadow man, is considering a next career move in North America. Meanwhile, it can be assumed that Säteri, father of two, will sooner or later return to his home country of Finland.
