Bitter. Through no fault of his own, new HCD attacker Aleksi Peltonen (25) was put on ice. Due to a violation of doping rules, Swiss Sport Integrity has temporarily banned the American Finn with a Swiss license and he is not even allowed to participate in the training.
The Finn suffers from type 1 diabetes and therefore – like more than 400 million diabetics worldwide – regularly needs insulin to lower his sugar levels.
Because insulin is also abused, especially in bodybuilding circles, and is on the doping list, athletes with diabetes are only allowed to use it with an exceptional permit. And the HCD made a mistake. «Someone did not submit the documents on time. As responsible for the sports area, I take full responsibility for this,” says sports director Jan Alston.
The HCD apologized to Aleksi Peltonen. The son of Lugano’s 2006 championship captain, Ville Peltonen (50), declined to comment on the case when asked.
Peltonen is more a victim than a perpetrator
Two and a half years ago there was a similar case: that of Cory Conacher (33). In February 2021, the Canadian moved from Lausanne to SC Bern. After the last play-off match in the quarter-finals against Zug (on April 23), Conacher was asked to take a doping test. And tested positive for insulin.
The SCB had not applied for an exemption at the time. Once awarded, it is valid for the entire season, regardless of any club changes. At SCB you could have assumed that Lausanne had already obtained this approval for Conacher, but that was obviously not the case.
At the time, Conacher accepted a three-month ban and a 2,500 franc fine in a settlement agreement with Antidoping Switzerland (today: Swiss Sport Integrity). The ban was in effect from May 5 to August 5 – during the non-competition period, which was approved by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Swiss Sport Integrity does not want to respond explicitly to the Peltonen case because the investigation is still ongoing. The HCD will now submit its player’s medical records and medical history.
It seems obvious that the twin brother of Lugano defender Jesper Peltonen is not a malicious doper, but the victim of an administrative error. Such was the case with Conacher, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 8. The Canadian was at least formally punished.
