NHL star Timo Meier (26) has been playing for the San Jose Sharks for seven years with jersey number 28. In February 2023 he will move to the New Jersey Devils. In addition to the new home, he also exchanges his beloved 28 on his back for the 96. He does not do this entirely voluntarily. His Devils teammate Damon Severson (29) is currently number 28. But that is not a problem for Meier. In his first professional steps, he appeared on the ice in Switzerland with the number 96. “I think it’s a cool number and it’s the year I was born,” says Meier.

Now, however, the tide has turned. About a month before the start of the NHL, Meier changed his jersey number again. And that’s his absolute favorite song. The 28th. You need to know: Severson moved to the Columbus Blue Jackets in early June. And the 28 was free again.

Family involved in decision

That’s why Meier thinks a lot about changing numbers. To do this, he involves his immediate environment in the decision-making process. “I talked to my friends and family and asked, ‘What do you think?’ And most people chose the 28.”

The problem is that the majority of Devils fans now wear a Meier jersey with the 96 on the back. Meier noticed that too. That’s why he successfully lobbied the club for a 28 percent Meier jersey discount in the first two weeks of the season. For which he even entered into a partnership with the Devils. Now fans have the opportunity to purchase another Meier jersey at discounted prices. 28 percent of these revenues are also donated to hockey in New Jersey.

The first 128 fans will also receive a puck signed by Meier. Finally, the star striker plans to meet some fans in person at the rink during an open training session. “It also brings me a lot. You can help children. We want everyone to be able to play hockey. And I got the chance to make my dream come true and play hockey,” says Meier.
