Viktorija Golubic (30) survived the first main round of the tournament in Guangzhou after qualifying. The woman from Zurich beats the Canadian Rebecca Marino (WTA 138) with 6:4, 6:3 and now meets Rebeka Masarova.
Golubic defeated Marino in just over 75 minutes without any major problems. Six games won in a row between 3:4 in the first and 3:0 in the second set make the difference.
In the round of 16, Golubic will face an opponent she knows well. The 24-year-old Masarova from Basel played for Switzerland until she moved to Spain in 2018 and occasionally met the almost seven-year-old Zuricher at the training center in Biel. In 2016, Masarova won the Roland Garros junior women’s tournament.
Golubic won the only previous meeting between the two in the semi-finals in Gstaad in 2016 on her way to her only WTA title to date. Masarova reached the top 100 for the first time this year after difficult seasons. She is currently number 64, which means she is ranked 42 places better than Golubic. (SDA)
