The German Football Association has found what it was looking for in its search for a new national coach. Julian Nagelsmann is now on the sidelines of the national team. Bild reports this. The only details left to be clarified are what will happen later on Tuesday. The contract runs until the 2024 European Championship.
The 36-year-old was recently considered the DFB’s favorite candidate. However, the commitment first required an agreement with FC Bayern Munich. Nagelsmann had to leave there last spring after mixed results, but was still on the club’s payroll.
As ‘Bild’ writes, the contract with Bayern will be terminated and he will move to the DFB for free. The monthly salary there should be 400,000 euros. This means that Nagelsmann is handing over a lot of money: at his old club he would have received 20 million until 2026 for doing nothing.
Back on track with Rudi Völler
Nagelsmann’s commitment also marks the end of the short but successful time of Rudi Völler (63) as coach of the German national team. With Völler on the bench, the team was able to return to victory after three defeats in a row – with a strong 2-1 win against top country and number two France.
Völler was then also considered a candidate to get the Germans back on track for the upcoming European Championship at home in 2024. The 1990 world champion categorically rejected a long-term position as national coach.
