The America’s Cup won’t take place for another year, but the six teams will already meet in the first qualifying round south of Barcelona.

For the newly formed Alinghi Red Bull Racing team, the first event ends with a mixed result. The Swiss finished the first showdown, which was held in the small AC40 boats, in 5th place.

With Friday completely canceled due to storms and Saturday shortened, Sunday turned out to be the day with the best conditions with three runs.

In the first Sunday race, Alinghi battles Luna Rossa for third place, the Italians retain the upper hand. In the next round there will be another duel with Luna Rossa, this time for second place behind the Americans.

No start in the decisive race

The team from Geneva, led by helmsman Arnaud Psarofaghis, sailed strongly and finished second, just like on Saturday. The Alinghi goal for the final race? To qualify for the “Match Race Final”, the final match between the two best teams in the overall standings.

But then this: the Swiss AC40 boat is going on strike. Alinghi Red Bull has to return to port before the start with a hydraulic problem. Bitter.

That is why Geneva fell to fifth place in the rankings. The final between American Magic and Team New Zealand cannot take place due to the wind; the Americans are declared winners of the first preliminary regatta.
