His HCD hockey heart broke at the same time as his bones in his lower leg: at the end of January, in the last minute of the middle third against Bern, Magnus Nygren jammed his skate in a groove in the ice and lay there in pain. The Davos crowd favorite suffered a broken tibia and fibula.
The certainty of having to say goodbye to HCD after six seasons briefly robbed the Swede of his confidence. A night full of tears in the hospital followed. Just a month earlier, the defender had decided to return home and signed a three-year contract with Färjestad BK.
“Victory against Biel was nice”
Only under the best circumstances would Nygren be able to return to fitness in time for the start of the season at his parent club, according to the prediction made eight months ago. Time was running out. “It wasn’t until ten days before the first match that I realized it could really work,” says Nygren, “from that moment on I was able to train under full pressure in all areas on and off the ice.” Just days earlier, the 33-year-old feared he would miss the start of the season. Neither the club nor he himself forced the return.
But the timing was perfect. Now Nygren already has two CHL games (two assists) to his name. He cannot resist the temptation: “It was of course nice that I won against Biel in the first match after my injury.” Farjestad won 4-1. The start of the season in the Swedish top competition SHL also went well on Thursday with a 4-1 win against Växjö. Nygren was on the ice again for 22 minutes.
Romantic wedding
Nygren has had an unforgettable summer, with an emotional rollercoaster ride. “The low point, hope, new start,” is how he summarizes it. He is happy to be back home and put his injury behind him. The father of two daughters has resigned himself to the fact that his departure from Davos did not happen with a game.
However, Nygren also experienced a special day of the Swedish summer off the ice. In mid-July he married Lisa Edlund, his long-time girlfriend and mother of his two daughters Vera and Alva: “It was one of the most beautiful days of my life, with all our loved ones.”
