Alinghi Red Bull Racing flies over the water: But it is not enough to achieve a first race victory in the first preparatory regatta of the America’s Cup 2024.

The America’s Cup won’t take place for a year, but this weekend the six teams will compete directly on the water in the small AC40 boats at Vilanova, south of Barcelona.

In the second race of the preliminary regatta, Alinghi Red Bull Racing shocked their opponents with a brilliant run to what looked like a certain victory. Only the people from Geneva managed to make the yacht fly well on the ‘foils’, the wings.

A failed maneuver destroys the entire pace

But the maneuver at the last buoy completely failed for the Swiss quartet around helmsman Arnaud Psarofaghis. They suddenly lose so much speed that they fall off the foil. The hull hits the water – the Geneve suddenly gets stuck in place and can no longer get going properly.

The previously defeated team New Zealand takes advantage and still wins. The first race of the day surprisingly went to the French, with Alinghi Red Bull taking fourth place.

The overall winner will be chosen today, Alinghi will enter the final day in third place overall. Four more races are scheduled for Sunday.

But the weather remains a question mark. The first races on Friday had to be canceled entirely due to a storm. On Sunday, only two of the four races could be held due to difficult wind conditions. (MD)
