Sepp Kuss (middle) is about to win the Vuelta.

Sepp Kuss is about to triumph in the Vuelta. The American was no longer attacked by his prominent teammates Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic on the penultimate hill stage.

The stage was won by the Dutchman Wout Poels, who surprisingly had the upper hand over Remco Evenepoel in a sprint in a group of five. The 35-year-old Poels won a stage in the Tour de France for the first time this year. Now the winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège 2016 celebrated for the first time in the Vuelta.

Early on, a top group of more than thirty men had been formed, which also included Evenepoel, but not the top 3 of the dominant Jumbo-Visma team. The difficult route with over 4,400 meters of elevation and over 200 kilometers was tailor-made for Evenepoel. But the 23-year-old Belgian was overtaken on the home stretch. When Poels attacked early, he was trapped and could not completely close the gap.

There is another show in Madrid on Sunday. American Kuss leads 17 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and 1:08 minutes ahead of Roglic – and it will remain that way. On Saturday in Guadarrama, the Jumbo-Visma trio crossed the finish line arm in arm, more than ten minutes behind. (SDA)
