Christian Wohlwend (46) failed at the start. Ajoie suffered a 3-7 defeat against the ZSC Lions on Friday. ‘We have something else planned. The fact that we have made too many mistakes ourselves to deprive ourselves of the opportunity to even come close to playing for points is annoying,” says the player from Graubünden.

But there’s no time to complain. Today the next task is planned and it is difficult. In his first home game with Ajoie it is against former club Davos. Wohlwend worked at HCD for three and a half years before having to leave last January. Accompanied by the background noise, he repeatedly missed the tone in dealing with players and therefore lost support.

Affordable with an advantage?

“I knew this match was coming. Whether it’s the first home game, the second or the third, it doesn’t really matter. I look forward to every match I get to coach,” says Wohlwend. But he also admits that the first matches against HCD will be special, but that this will certainly level off: “The sport is moving quickly.”

You could be of the opinion that the Engadin has an advantage in this hot match against HCD because he knows all the Davos players inside and out, apart from the new signings. But Wohlwend immediately puts this into perspective: “It is true that I know the players well, but under the new head coach they play a new system. Also in this game the deciding factor is who wins more duels and who makes fewer mistakes.”

Stay yourself, also with Ajoie

When asked whether he was good for his players at Ajoie, Wohlwend replied: “I have to be good, because if something else comes out, I will be put to the torture stake again.” In any case, he thinks: “I’m a nice guy and actually I was in Davos. But you can turn that around if you want, so that what happened happens.”

Despite this experience, he does not want to pretend in his new job as a lawyer, but wants to remain himself and authentic. «I am a coach who always tells every player where he stands and is always honest. I’m not someone who hides something to make it more pleasant for myself. I expect the same from the players.”

Beautiful things are happening in the Jura

Wohlwend actually has nothing to lose with Ajoie. The 14th and last place at the table is unavoidable for most experts. Anything better would be a success. But the Bunden resident wants more: “Our goal is to participate in the play-in. Otherwise we don’t even have to play. But this goal is only realistic if we implement what we learned in the preparation and play better than against ZSC.”

Wohlwend is convinced that his team will “present themselves differently” in game two against Davos. If the surprise actually succeeds against HCD, which also started with a defeat (3:4 against Fribourg), it would be a great satisfaction for Wohlwend in this special match. Even though he would almost never say it that way himself.
