FC Luzern embraces a prodigal son. After six years in Italy, Nicolas Haas (27) has been under contract with the Central Swiss team again since the beginning of September. «It was my wish to return. That’s why it feels very good to be here again,” he tells Blick.

At Empoli, many things have not gone according to Haas’s ideas lately. On the one hand the regular selection is changing, on the other hand the lack of playing time. “I wanted to play and not just watch.” That is why he informed sports director Pietro Accardi (41) of his wish to change.

“I had goosebumps”

But because Empoli was counting on him, Haas had to be patient. Ultimately, the Tuscans and Lucerne agreed on a loan with an option to purchase. The fact that it will be drawn next summer is probably just a formality. ‘I want to be there and stay there. “I am very excited about this project,” the Sursee resident says of Blau-Weiss.

The FCL is a cause close to Haas’s heart. The day of the signing was “very emotional” when he was announced as the new signing by the speaker at the Swissporarena. “I had goosebumps. “My mother had tears in her eyes,” he says.

Appointed as leader

Emotions or not. Expectations are high. Haas is aware of this. “You have to be extremely prepared in your mind and know what to expect.” Coach Mario Frick (49) sees a leadership role for him, both on and off the field. But the midfielder does not just want to pass on his experience. «I am here to attack and develop. After all, I am still young and still want to learn a lot.”

He does not mention specific goals that Haas wants to achieve with the FCL. He praises the club for this. “A lot has happened since I left. I see a very positive development of the club.” He has also done a lot for his personal development during these years. In a few weeks he will submit his bachelor’s thesis as part of his psychology studies at a German distance learning university.

Experienced a lot in Italy

He also filled his backpack with football. In Italy he has seen almost everything, from the north (Atalanta) to the center (Frosinone, Empoli) to the south (Palermo). “It was a dream of mine to play in Serie A. It’s great to have achieved this.” He mentions the promotion at Empoli and the away wins against Inter, Napoli and Juventus as highlights. A low point, however, was the torn cruciate ligament that he suffered shortly before Christmas 2021.

Now Haas continues his career in his hometown. His intention is clear: “If one day I give up my FCL jersey with number 32, the club should have taken another step and moved in the right direction.”
