Xhaka and Hradecky about Leverkusen draw in Munich: ‘Bayern were afraid of us’

Big party at Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel has demanded more power from his stars ahead of the hot autumn. “We need to become more stable and grippy in general. We have room for improvement there. It’s a bit of a low point,” Tuchel said after the 2-2 (1-1) draw in the Bundesliga top match against leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

His team struggles to maintain compactness. Even against the rebellious challenger, “sometimes we had control, sometimes not, sometimes we were compact, sometimes not,” the Bayern coach lamented. Bayern starts the Champions League against Manchester United on Wednesday. There are still six games to go before the international break in October.

Bayern took the lead twice through superstar Harry Kane (7th) and Leon Goretzka (86th). But Alejandro Grimaldo hit back with a dream free kick (24th) and Exequiel Palacios (90th + 4) with a penalty. Tuchel disagreed with referee Daniel Schlager’s decision based on video evidence. That was “super soft”.

Xhaka believes he has a chance to win the title

Leverkusen didn’t care: after the hard-fought and deserved draw, the Werkself see themselves on a level playing field with the series champions. Could you keep up with Bayern in the title fight? “I think so,” Bayer’s midfield boss Granit Xhaka replied confidently on DAZN. But it is “still very early to talk big. We have to keep our feet on the ground. We had a number of opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of. That is the next step, we have to get there.”

Nevertheless: “Coming back to Munich twice deserves respect,” said the Swiss.

The fear of Hradecky and Bayern

Strong Bayer goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky added that they had “passed the toughest test of endurance”: “We have never been better here. Bayern were a bit afraid of us.” But Bayer coach Xabi Alonso warned against too much euphoria: “May is still far away. It would be a mistake to think about that. The only thing that matters is the next match.”

Yet Konrad Laimer from Munich also has Bayer on the bill. “You have to take them seriously, they are a super team with very good individual kickers,” said Laimer: “But the season has only just started.” (AFP/SME)
