Transfer prices on the transfer market are becoming increasingly extreme. This summer alone, the twenty Premier League clubs invested the equivalent of more than two billion francs in new player equipment – a record. Pep Guardiola (52) contributed to this with Manchester City and overtook his coaching colleague José Mourinho (60) as the coach with the highest expenditure in world football.
After a transfer summer in which ManCity signed the most expensive central defender in the world with the arrival of Josko Gvardiol (21) for around 86 million francs, Guardiola’s total expenditure on new players in his coaching career increased to 1.93 billion francs (source Transfermarkt ). Particularly striking: Guardiola signed far fewer players for the amount of money than his coaching colleagues (see box below).
Two coaches have never trained in England
Guardiola was allowed to spend most of this money after his arrival in Manchester. The Qatari sheikh has opened his checkbook to 51 players since 2016 and allowed the Spaniard’s transfer requests to cost more than 1.4 billion. Conversely, Guardiola spent noticeably less on his previous positions in Munich (around 200 million) and Barcelona (around 330 million).
The influence of English TV money can also be seen in the fact that the old number 1 has been overtaken since she started working in Italy: Mourinho did not shy away from high fees during his stay in England. The Pogba deal for more than 100 million euros in 2016 was a world record transfer fee at the time. Nine of Mourinho’s ten most expensive transfers come from his time at Chelsea or Man Utd.
The podium is completed by Real coach Carlo Ancelotti (64). The experienced coach spent approximately 1.62 billion on new players during his long career. His most expensive acquisition came from Real Madrid this summer: Jude Bellingham came from Dortmund for almost 100 million francs. (dti)
