The season is still young, but things are already simmering at Manchester United. On a sporting level, the “Red Devils” are not doing as well as they had hoped; they were defeated against their direct competitors Tottenham (0:2) and most recently Arsenal (1:3).

And something also seems to be wrong within the team. A clash takes place in United’s dressing room – between coach Erik ten Hag (53) and star striker Jadon Sancho (23).

The Sancho problem

Background: In the summer of 2021, Sancho moved from BVB to Manchester United for a whopping €85 million, making him the fourth most expensive signing in the club’s history to date. This obviously raises expectations that the Englishman, who has strong dribbling skills, has not been able to meet so far.

Even in his third season at Manchester, Sancho failed to become a top player. In almost sixty Premier League games, he scored just nine goals. Not enough for an attacker with his price tag. Additionally, there are always rumors of unprofessional behavior off the field and poor work ethics in training.

Attacking the coach after not being taken into account

United coach Erik ten Hag had clearly had enough and did not include Sancho in the matchday squad for Sunday’s match against Arsenal. A memory that the Dutchman explained as follows after the match: “Jadon was missing because of his performance in training. At Manchester United you have to reach a certain level every day.”

Sancho took this statement as an attack on himself – and felt compelled to make a public statement late at night on his social media channels to which he responded. «Please don’t believe everything you read! I will not allow people to say completely untrue things, I behaved very well in training this week,” was the clear answer.

Sancho thus directly contradicts his coach. And goes one step further: “I think there are other reasons for that that I don’t want to go into. I have been a scapegoat for a long time, which is not fair.” Last season, Ten Hag was without Sancho for weeks – officially due to ‘physical and mental problems’.

On Thursday, Manchester United responded to the scandal public: Sancho is no longer allowed to train with the first team until further notice and will have to complete a personal program, according to the official announcement. Can the relationship between club and player still be restored?
