The cycling world mourns Kota Ikarashi (†21). The Japanese died after a horror crash during the first stage of the Tour de Hokkaido in his home country.
According to media reports, Ikarashi collided with a car on the route because the race organizers had allowed cars on a descent. The professional cyclist died a short time later in hospital from his injuries.
Stages cancelled
«Kota Ikarashi from the Chuo University team died in the hospital he was taken to. “I pray for his soul,” race president Takayuki Yamamoto said in a statement. The 2nd and 3rd stages of the race were cancelled.
Ikarashi is the third driver this season to have a fatal racing accident. The Swiss Gino Mäder (†26) died in June in the Tour of Switzerland, and a month later the young Italian rider Jacopo Venzo (†17) died in the Tour of Austria. (bjl)
