Nino Schurter reaches the podium for the fourth time in the sixth cross-country race of the Mountain Bike World Cup. Despite a flat tire, the 37-year-old from Graubünden finished second in Les Gets behind the Frenchman Victor Koretzky and ahead of the Romanian Vlad Dascalu. Marcel Guerrini surprises in fourth place.
Schurter, who had to start from the fourth row after skipping the short race, was already in second place when he had to stop in the tech zone at the end of the sixth of eight loops, temporarily losing his position. As a result, he confidently regained second place.
Koretzky creates a double
Schurter, who was slowed down by a cold in Andorra, could hardly have prevented Koretzky’s third World Cup victory even without a defect. The 29-year-old from the south of France, who finished third at the World Championships behind Schurter and Mathias Flückiger two years ago and won the World Cup on snowshoes, but was not yet up to speed in the cross season this season, increased the pace for almost the entire duration of the race and had already suspended his competitors at that time. At the finish his lead over Schurter was 17 seconds and that over Dascalu 21 seconds. Surprisingly, Koretzky achieved the double in the home race after winning the short race on Friday.
Guerrini more successful than ever
Behind Schurter, who again extended his lead in the overall World Cup, Marcel Guerrini surprised with his best career result. In fourth place, the 28-year-old from St. Gallen was just five seconds short of his first podium finish. His previous best result at the World Cup was 8th place a year ago in Val di Sole, a week after finishing fifth at the World Cup.
Mathias Flückiger, Joel Roth and Vital Albin followed in 9th, 10th and 13th place. The two-time European U23 champion Roth equaled his best World Cup result among the elite. Filippo Colombo, who started from way back, finished in 23rd place in his second race after a long injury break. (SDA)
