Carlos Alcaraz on the ground. The Spaniard is disappointed and self-critical after the defeat in the semi-finals of the US Open.

For Carlos Alcaraz (20), still number 1 in the world, the semi-finals at the US Open are the end of the line. Opponent Daniil Medvedev (27, ATP 3) is simply too strong for the Spanish defending champion tonight and will play for the title against Novak Djokovic (36, ATP 2) on Sunday.

After the match, Alcaraz was disappointed with himself: “I couldn’t find any solutions. I thought I was now a better player to find solutions when the match wasn’t going in the right direction. After this match I will change my mind,” he explains.

Alcaraz needs a break

“I’m not mature enough to handle this kind of competition,” the youngster continued. After the disappointment, Alcaraz is now taking a break. He will not take part in next weekend’s Davis Cup group matches as originally announced.

Opponent Medvedev showed respect to Alcaraz after the match: “It’s great to beat a player like Carlos, he is number one for a reason. I knew I had to play eleven out of ten to pass today – and I even reached the twelfth level. The Russian now wants to achieve his second US Open victory after 2021. Then too, the opponent in the final was Novak Djokovic.

The Serbian confidently won his semi-final against American youngster Ben Shelton (20, ATP 47) in three sets and wants to win the 24th Grand Slam title of his career. To prevent this, “I have to be even better,” Medvedev predicts. (bjl)
