Leaving Switzerland with a black eye: Daniel Kral.

That could have been an eye opener! And literally. Goalkeeper Daniel Kral (20) was incredibly lucky in the friendly match between Ambri-Piotta and Czech club Bili Tygri Liberec (3:1). An Ambri player’s powerful shot slams through his mask and gets caught in the metal struts millimeters before his eye – slowed down by his cheekbone.

‘I absolutely loved it. I thought someone had hit me,” Kral describes the incident in an interview on the club’s website. “There was a shot I didn’t see. At the last moment when a player moved in front of me, the shot hit me right in the biggest hole in the mask. I didn’t even know it was a puck at first.”

Fear of vision

The goalkeeper loses consciousness from the force of the shot. When he regains consciousness and is no longer wearing the mask, he cannot see anything in his right eye. The fear that this will continue is great. He is immediately taken to the hospital, where investigations continue late into the night.

An ophthalmologist takes care of the young player and releases everything. Everything is going fine with the eyes so far, Kral’s relief is enormous. The tear under the eye is sewn up, after which he is allowed to leave the hospital. At home, he will undergo further tests to see if and to what extent the bones of the eye socket are affected.

“A Great Coincidence”

Kral, meanwhile, has viewed the photo his club took of the helmet jammed with the puck. “It was a great coincidence,” he says. “The puck hit the widest point to the millimeter.” Club doctor Dusan Morman also emphasizes how lucky he is in adversity. “It was a bizarre situation. If the puck had gone a little further into the mask, it might not have ended so well,” he told the club.

Despite the shock that did not end well, Kral wants to put the goalkeeper equipment back on quickly. He will only know how long he will be out after the examinations at home. But: “I hope I can come back as soon as possible”. (beer)
