Bouwmeester’s World Cup podium is obscured as Jonker wins race eight
For sailor Marit Bouwmeester, the view of the podium is clouded. She starts the last day of the World Cup in the Ilca 6 Olympic class as seventh in the table.
She was heading for a podium finish with five races to go, but 34-year-old Friezin dropped three places after some disappointing results. Bouwmeester finished 17th, 11th and 5th in Saturday’s three races off the coast of Kemah, Texas.

The world title is out of reach, but a podium finish for the three-time Olympic champion from the Netherlands is still an option. But it won’t be easy. She is 10 points behind Maria Erdi of Hungary and 11 points behind Emma Plasschaert of Belgium.
Denmark’s Anne-Marie Rindom is heading for gold. Rindom, last year’s Olympic Laser Radial champion, won the ninth and tenth heat and now leads the standings with 19 points.
Jonker also took a look at the podium
Maxime Jonker also has a chance of a podium finish. The 27-year-old won race eight on Saturday and climbed up to eighth place overall, just behind Bouwmeester. Mirthe Akkerman is number 18 in the ranking.
