Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker and Stan Wawrinka win the doubles competition at the Swiss Open in Gstaad. The 20-year-old from Bern and the 18-year-old from Vaud won in the final against the best placed duo Marcelo Demoliner and Matwé Middelkoop 7:6 (10:8), 6:2.

Stricker and Wawrinka did not have to fend off a break ball from the Brazilian and the Dutchman, but they did have to fend off a set ball in the tiebreak.

In singles, the Swiss in the Bernese Oberland have been waiting for a small sense of achievement in the form of a quarter-final qualification for ten years. They are much more successful in doubles. Stricker already triumphed in Gstaad two years ago, then together with Marc-Andrea Hüsler.

Triumph 15 years after Fedrinka Gold

It is Wawrinka’s third double tournament victory at ATP level. Ten years ago he won with Benoît Paire in Chennai, in 2008 he won Olympic gold with Roger Federer – unforgettable as “Fedrinka”.

While Wawrinka advances in the 1st round against a qualifier in Umag, Stricker tries to repeat last year’s victory at the Challenger tournament in Zug. (SDA)
