Referee from Togo

The kick-off of the Nati World Cup is officiated by a referee from Togo. Vincentia Amedome (41) has been whistling for FIFA since 2015 and has played several times at the Africa Cup of Nations. It is a first for them at a World Cup.

A good 12,000 miles to Wembley

The match against the Philippines, just like the third group match against New Zealand, will be played at Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium. The rugby and football stadium can accommodate around 25,000 fans and is currently the only covered natural grass stadium in the world. “It’s the furthest stadium in the world from Wembley – but the best footballers come,” reads a poster in Dunedin’s city center.

Not completely sold out

The organizers expect nearly 20,000 fans on Friday for the game between the Nati and the Philippines. This means that the game will not be sold out, although the organizers gave away 5,000 free tickets.

Bad lawn

The national team is not allowed to complete the last training session in the stadium and must transfer to an adjacent field. The deep and not lush green lawn needs to be protected, after all there are six games in Dunedin. The players use the short walk in the beautiful arena to take a souvenir selfie.

Fan Festival at City Hall

There is an official fan festival in Dunedin city centre. This takes place in the town hall. However, the opening game of co-hosts New Zealand only attracted moderate interest. About 200 follow the game – mostly sitting. Bands provide pre-match entertainment and a hip-hop dance troupe during intermission.
