Coach Bruno Berner is happy with the start of the season at GC.

Record champion GC starts the new Super League season against Servette on Saturday. The team that will then be on the field will probably change considerably in the coming weeks. The team from Zurich wants to expand its squad by the end of the transfer window (September 7, 2023) and planning for this project is in full swing in Niederhasli.

“At the beginning of the preparation I could only train with six or seven experienced players. It’s a bit different now, but we’re still going to do transfers,” said coach Bruno Berner at the press conference prior to the game against Servette.

There is a demand for experienced people

GC should get reinforcements in central midfield. A look at the average age of the team also shows that GC is the youngest of all Super League teams. Highest level to also get at least one veteran player. Berner, as usual, doesn’t comment on names and rumours, but says, “We’ll be adding more in all rows, or at least looking forward to it.”

Due to the fact that the selection planning has not yet been completed and the short preparation that is usual in Switzerland, the new classification coach has so far developed the team – in addition to tactical exercises – mainly in the mental field. The positive energy that Berner brought in is “immense”, says Captain Amir Abrashi (33). “That was the first thing I noticed when I got back to campus.”

“Want to make new GC”

He won’t reveal how Berner brought his team together. “Otherwise others will copy it,” he says with a smile. However, there were targeted measures such as group work. The reason is obvious: “GC only comes forward as a unit, we want to convey this feeling to the players and then of course to the fans. We want to create a new GC.”

Trainer Berner and Abrashi do not make any predictions for the start of the season against Servette on Saturday. Points are the goal. Due to the circumstances, the game is also like a location determination. In the worst case, the GC shows whether any blatant improvements are still needed. At best, three points are already out, because opponent Servette should not have to master every detail under his new coach René Weiler (49).
