18th stage of the Tour de France: Asgreen makes the sprinters dizzy

Stage 18 winner: Kasper Asgreen.

Kasper Asgreen surprisingly wins the 18th stage of the Tour de France on its home stretch in Bourg-en-Bresse. The Dane controls a leading group of four men on the flat stage.

Partly thanks to the wind at the back, the quartet managed to cross the finish line a few seconds before the field. The sprinter teams had underestimated the strength and harmony of the breakaway group and could not get quite close. The Dutchman Pascal Eenkhoorn and the Norwegian Jonas Abrahamse were also on the podium of the day.

The first loser of the day was the Belgian sprinter king Jasper Philipsen. Most observers agreed beforehand that the 25-year-old would triumph in the Tour de France for the fifth time this year.

Philipsen can make up for what he missed on Friday. Stage 19, with its ups and downs through the Jura, ends with an endless 8km straight in Poligny. The sprinter teams may not be caught a second time.

Jonas Vingegaard has a quiet day in the yellow jersey. Last year’s winner from Denmark is still 7:35 minutes ahead of his rival Tadej Pogacar after strong performances in the Alps. (SDA)
