There is a huge bang at the Formula E race in Rome.

The Formula E race in Rome has been halted after a serious accident. First, Briton Sam Bird (36) lost control of his racing car and ended up on the other side of the road. The Swiss Sébastien Buemi (34) could no longer avoid and hit the rear of the Jaguar. Buemi’s compatriot Edoardo Mortara (36) shortly afterwards drove head-on into Bird’s car, which was touched and grazed by other drivers.

Apparently, everyone involved survived the accident without significant injuries and the pilots were immediately medically examined. “It looks like the cars were doing their job and providing safety,” said Jaguar team principal James Barclay over the ProSieben microphone.

Buemi’s vehicle caught fire and had to be extinguished. Countless pieces of debris littered the road in Italy’s capital. After the race restart, New Zealand’s Mitch Evans took victory ahead of compatriot Nick Cassidy, who took the championship lead. (AFP)
