Natalia Gemperle takes the silver medal.

Natalia Gemperle writes history at the OL-WM. The double citizen wins the silver medal in the middle distance and is the first athlete to win a two-nation orienteering medal. Born in Russia, she previously won 12 medals for her country.

The neo-Swiss confidently enters the decisive phase and does not go along with a mistake by the Swede. This gives her the necessary cushion for silver, 2:18 behind in a 37-minute running time.

Gemperle has had a Swiss passport for a year, but has not been wearing the Swiss dress for very long. Since a change of country was not accepted during the season, she had to wait until 2023 for her first assignment.

It is a disappointment for Simona Aebersold. Thursday’s winner in the long distance made two serious mistakes and had to settle for 13th place. (SDA)
