The tragic accident of Connor Lambert shakes up the cycling world.

After the tragic death of Gino Mäder († 26), the cycling world is again shaken by a fatal accident. Australian cyclist Connor Lambert († 25) was hit by a truck during training last Wednesday and succumbed to his injuries moments later.

Lambert was hugely popular in Australia’s cycling world, advocating, coaching and supporting the young. He was in Belgium precisely for that: to train a promising junior.

The condolences were shared by many, with Tour de France participants Luke Durbridge (32, Team Jayco Alula) and third overall Jake Hindley (27, Bora-Hansgrohe) also expressing their grief on social media. Giving an interview after the eleventh stage, Hindley said of Lambert that he was “a really great person and friend” and that he will “think about him for the rest of the tour”.

Accidents during training often happen, cyclists are often given the right of way, or they are overlooked and hit by vehicles, often resulting in serious injury and sometimes, as in Lambert’s case, death. Such tragic accidents have happened again and again in recent years.

The most famous case of recent years is the death of Davide Rebellin. Shortly after his discharge he was run over by a truck, the German truck driver committed a collision and only recently turned himself in to the police in Germany. (nsa)
