Nadine giant cold resistant

What would be unthinkable here in the summer heat, only Nadine Riesen (23) dares on the other side of the world. She is the only national team player to wear shorts during first training in New Zealand. Winter alarm in the women’s team at eight degrees. After a 30-hour journey and two days of getting used to jet lag in Dunedin, the team will enter the training field at Tahuna Park for the first time on Thursday. It’s just a stone’s throw from the Pacific coast, so it’s windy.

Lia Wälti ready to play

The first training is also a good test for captain Lia Wälti (30). She recovered from her ankle injury in time and will be available for the team’s first World Cup match against the Philippines (July 21). “I can do everything again and I am fully involved,” said the Arsenal midfielder on SRF.

Haka at the hotel

It’s a different kind of welcome. The Nati is visited by young Maori in the team hotel, who of course also present a Haka. The ritual dance is best known in sports for the New Zealand rugby team.

Lots of Filipino fans

Will there be an away game for the national team at the start of the World Cup (July 21, 7am live SRF2)? Philippine captain Tahnai Annis (32) says on the World Cup website: “We had camps in Costa Rica, Spain and Chile, and our fans showed up everywhere.” In any case, according to 2018 government statistics, there are significantly more Filipinos in New Zealand (72,612) than in Switzerland (2,649).

Question mark around Putellas

Current world football star Alexia Putellas (29) missed the European Championship 2022 in England due to a cruciate ligament tear and is now also worried about the World Cup. Or at least to be a factor for Spain. The Barcelona star made his comeback in May and is part of the World Cup squad. But since his arrival in New Zealand, Putellas only trains individually due to ailments.

Fear of spiders at the DFB

The German players know more about the host country than they would like. Captain Alexandra Popp (32) is a trained zookeeper and provided education on what crawls and flees Down Under. “I took a moment to make a little presentation about one animal species or the other. Koalas, different types of kangaroos and of course what we can expect: the most venomous animals in the world. Maybe I aroused more fear than I wanted to,” says Popp on “Bild.de”.
